Job Summary

The Engineer position provides technical support to Operations on assigned units. This person acts as a technical liaison for the assigned units or area to other areas of the company (such as the Business Optimization Group, Project Engineering, Process Design, Environmental, Safety, Strategic Planning, Purchasing, etc.) as well as outside parties (such as equipment, chemical and catalyst vendors).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and/or Civil Engineering required
  • Experience in a refinery, petrochemical or industrial industry preferred
  • Knowledge of OSHA General Safety, PSM regulations, NFPA, API, and ANSI standards
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Effective oral and written communication
  • Strong computer skills, including Excel, Microsoft Word and Power Point
  • Valid Driver's License required
  • Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) Eligibility 
  • Eligibility Requirements:  The Maritime Transportation Security Act requires all persons who will need unescorted access to a regulated facility to have a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC), issued in accordance with the rules established by the United States Coast Guard and the Transportation Security Administration.  All candidates must be eligible to receive a TWIC in order to be considered for an offer.

Job Duties

  • Diagnose operating problems and monitor operations of assigned units daily.
  • Demonstrate analytical and engineering skills.
  • Exhibit intimate knowledge of the process and technologies of assigned units.
  • Use and apply standard principles, theories, concepts, and techniques in providing solutions to various problems.
  • Provide technical assistance to assigned area and troubleshoot operating problems while recommending timely solutions.
  • Develop conceptual plans, analyze scope of projects, and determine engineering requirements.
  • Prepare special studies and reports including engineering and technological studies, feasibility and economic analysis reports and cost estimates.
  • Develop process designs for small ( less than USD 1MM) capital projects.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.

Job Duties II

  • Provide engineering support to refinery on safety related issues and projects.  Responsible for reviewing all capital and any assigned major maintenance construction projects for safety, industry standards and loss control issues.  Must identify hazards introduced by the projects by self or by getting advice of other safety department personnel. Responsible for propose safeguards to identified hazards and working with engineering, maintenance and construction groups to specify needed safety & fire equipment.  Must participate in project PHAs and PSSRs as needed
  • Develop direction for Loss Control Program. Work with Insurance Broker & corporate risk consultants to conduct loss control analysis for the refinery processes, conduct risk analysis to identify projects (i.e. emergency isolation valves, water spray systems, fire water monitors, fire proofing etc.) with the most cost benefit for reduction of potential losses
  • Oversee various PHA recommendations for completion. Act as coordinator of closure of PHA recommendations by assigning job tasks from department to department as the item progresses to closure
  • Oversee Risk Analysis Evaluations.  Lemont Subject Matter Expert for corporate risk analysis standard.  Responsible for leading safety/risk evaluation (either CRS-100 or Layers of Protection Analysis) of recommendations from recent process hazard analysis
  • Project Manager for Small Safety TS&E/Capital Projects (as assigned by HSSE).  Develop AFEs, Project Design Basis, detailed engineering documents, Project Execution Plan as needed for project. Manage the project to see that the design is implemented per the execution plan and within budget
  • Oversee all Corporate Safety Standards Application at Lemont. Oversee all CSS Variances, Advise HSSE Management on Policy Positions for CSS Variances
  • Oversee Fire Water and Other Safety Systems Monitor operating condition of fire water system pressure and pump operations to assure reliable operations. Communicate to the firewater system stakeholders when necessary.  Responsible for reviewing preventative maintenance programs for the prevention of failure on demand for safety/firewater systems. Serve as SME for other refinery safety systems (fire alarms, fixed gas detectors, safety showers, plant emergency notification system, etc.)

Other Responsibilities and Duties

  • Conduct/Lead Root Cause Failure Analysis as assigned
  • Train others in Root Cause Failure Analysis methods
  • Conduct needed Toxic Material Dispersion/Fire Analysis
  • Conduct assigned Safety Std. Research for HSSE Management
  • Assist in Industrial Hygiene assessments
  • Become Knowledgeable of Industry Standards
  • Become knowledgeable of Competitor Standards
  • Responsible for Safety Engineering Legislation Issues
  • Oversee HSSE MOCs
  • Manage assigned MOCs for Projects/Dept.
