Job Summary
The Automation Control Specialist has the primary responsibility for developing, implementing, and maintaining basic and advanced process control strategies and applications for an assigned area. This position improves process unit performance and optimizes unit operation through deployment and support of process control concepts and technology. Additional support duties include alarm management program, advanced operator interface graphics (HMI) development, general troubleshooting of operating conditions, and to provide training to Console Operators regarding control strategies, alarm management and HMI (Human Machine Interface).
Minimum Qualifications
- Associates degree in Instrumentation, Process Control, Process Technology, Electronics, or Computer Science, plus 5 years of refinery I&E maintenance, design, or operations experience
- 10 years of experience providing DCS support including control strategy configuration, alarm management, and HMI configuration
- Basic knowledge of safe process control design techniques
- Basic computer skills and use of MS Office Suite
- Ability to work independently toward assigned objectives with minimal supervision in a multi-tasked, fast-paced environment
- Must have strong written and verbal communication skills
- Must have strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Valid driver's license
- Ability to obtain a Transportation Worker's Identification Credential (TWIC)
Job Duties
- Monitor, troubleshoot and support the alarm management. Investigate bad actor, shelved, and standing alarms and coordinate with the Console Operators, Operations Excellence Supervisors and Unit Supervisors for actions to resolve the problems. Initiate MOC (Management of Change) actions to update needed alarm changes, perform alarm rationalization for new alarms or changes to existing alarms. Monitor existing dynamic alarming strategies and develop new logic to adapt alarm setting to dynamic unit operating conditions. Update alarm documentations. Generate alarm KPI (Key Performance Indicator) reports for the assigned consoles.
- Resource for problem solving in routing monitoring of regulatory and APC (Advanced Process Control) utilization, control performance discussion with console operators, reactivation of dropped controlled and manipulated variables, identification of poorly performing regulatory loops and tuning adjustments, and providing operator support on control issues.
- Maintain and ex support for existing High-Performance Human-Machine Interface (HP-HMI) console operator graphics. Assure that the operator interface delivers high value to minimize unit upsets. Monitor graphic performance for system load issues. Develop new schematics as need arises.
- Lead development of new and maintenance of existing supporting calculations, inferential, and control applications. Consult towards new and rework efforts for APC development.
- Participate in failure analysis and incident investigations, participate on technical teams as required.
- Develop and review KPI for weekly work activity report, including weekly reporting of APC utilization, APC utilization correction as needed, weekly reporting of poor performing control loops, process unit performance monitoring using data from the DCS (Distributed Control System) and PI (Plant Information system), activities related to alarm management along with alarm system performance, activities related to HMI development/maintenance, and other general work activities
- Monitor and report performance of Near Infrared Analyzers. Coordinate or provide maintenance for hardware and software.
