Job Summary
Administers quality, comprehensive occupational health services within the scope of professional nursing. Interprets and ensures compliance with laws, regulations and standards governing health and safety of employees. Knowledgeable of company standards and government mandates to ascertain the fitness of an employee to perform the job duties. Coordinates and manages occupational health programs and health assets for CITGO employees.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree and 7 years of job related experience required
TX State Professional Nurse License
Occupational Health Nurse Certification (COHN-S) *
CPR Certification *
Audiometric Certification *
Spirometry Certification *
Breath Alcohol Technician Certification *

Able to work toward assigned goals without supervision
Computer skills: e-mail, Word, Excel, HMS or comparable
Typically requires 3 years as a RN in ER, ICU, or Urgent Care facility and 4 years as an Occupational Health Nurse in an industrial setting or the equivalent demonstrated proficiency in a similar role or equivalent education.
Job Duties
- Administers clinical and primary medical care including assessment, nursing diagnosis, management and documentation of occupational and non-occupational illness and injury. This can include collaboration with the treating physician, Industrial Hygienist, employee’s direct Supervisor, and Human Resources
- Directs federally mandated medical surveillance testing and examinations performed by contract employees. Analyzes all results, determining need for referrals for further medical care by outside medical providers. Reviews reports with employee and advises employee on further medical care based on the results.

Provides case management for occupational and non-occupational illnesses and injuries ensuring compliance with all applicable state and federal regulations. Collaborates with the outside medical provider and the employee in determining employee’s ability to return to work, modified duty, or disability. Reports disability status to management for purposes of planning for temporary employees, scheduling of overtime or shifting of duties. Functions as a Consultant to Human Resources and Management in workers’ compensation claims.

Ascertain fitness-for-duty of employees at the Refinery to determine ability to maintain safe work performance. Approves all employees’ return to work following a medical leave of absence. Collaborates with Corporate MD on cases with potential for significant impact. Determines fitness for duty for all new hires.

Coordinates and conducts drug and alcohol testing on 50% of the employee population per year, ensuring it is consistent with CITGO and DOT standards. Maintains Breath Alcohol Technician certification. Ensures testing equipment is in compliance with DOT calibration requirements and is in functional, working order.

Provide consultation, counseling, referrals and health education for employees. Analyzes testing data to develop health promotion programs and disease prevention strategies.

Determines the need and select the outside medical service providers to provide off site medical services. Develops and promotes relationship of company with the local health care providers

Takes after hour call for occupational injury and/or incident, which may require physical response to the plant, as deemed necessary
