Job Summary

Own the end-to-end administration, analysis, negotiation, and resolution of all marine voyage claims impacting the commercial value chain. Review voyage documentation and contractual terms to validate claims and identify recovery opportunities, including demurrage, freight and hire discrepancies, port/terminal delays, detention, deviation/extra costs, shortages/overages, and other voyage-related charges. Partner with Trading, Scheduling, Marine Operations, Terminals, Credit, and counterparties to resolve disputes, drive timely settlement, protect company rights and obligations, and improve processes and data quality within RightAngle and other commercial operations related tools/related systems to reduce future exposure and maximize recoveries.

Minimum Qualifications

•    Must have the ability to work without supervision.
•    Strong working knowledge of marine voyage operations, chartering concepts (voyage/time charter), and voyage documentation.
•    Working knowledge of voyage-claim principles (laytime/demurrage, freight/hire, detention, deviations, and shortage claims) and familiarity with relevant marine contracts and standard industry practices.
•    Ability to plan, prioritize, and execute multiple simultaneous investigations/negotiations while maintaining accurate documentation.
•    Proficient computer software skills including but not limited to Excel, with preferred RightAngle experience.

Minimum years of job-related experience required: HS plus 7 or BS plus 3

Job Duties

1. Analyze, validate, and resolve marine voyage claims received from vessel owners, charterers, terminals, and other counterparties. Determine claim validity and accuracy through review of charter parties, fixtures, voyage orders, general terms and conditions, notices, statements of facts, pumping/time logs, laytime calculations, invoices, and supporting correspondence. Develop sound, defensible positions for acceptance, rejection, or negotiated reduction based on contract language and applicable industry practice. Identify root cause (e.g., weather, berth delays, documentation, operations, and document rationale. Accurately code, route, and approve claims for payment processing in SAP/ERP and ensure timely closure in accordance with internal controls.

2. Prepare, present, and pursue outbound marine voyage claims to customers, suppliers, and service providers to recover costs incurred by the company. Build complete claim packages (supporting documents, calculations, and narratives), issue invoices/rebillings within contractual time bars, and follow through to settlement. Coordinate with Credit/AR to apply payments, resolve deductions, and maintain current receivables. Translate complex voyage events into clear, auditable explanations for internal stakeholders and counterparty claims teams.

3. Consult and advise Trading, Scheduling, and Marine Operations on voyage-claim risk drivers and contractual provisions (e.g., laytime, NOR/tendering, shifting, pumping rates, berth/terminal clauses, deviation, agency fees) to avoid or minimize future claims. Provide guidance during voyage execution and post-voyage reviews to improve documentation quality and preserve recovery rights.

4. Leverage RightAngle, and other commercial operations tools to improve voyage-claims visibility, controls, and efficiency. Identify process gaps, data-quality issues, and recurring loss drivers; implement or recommend enhancements (standard work, templates, controls, or system changes) to reduce cycle time and eliminate rework. Maintain accurate claim status tracking, aging, and audit-ready documentation.

5. Track, analyze, and report voyage-claim exposure and performance (open items, aging, root causes, and recoveries). Partner with Marine Operations, Terminals, and Scheduling to validate operational timelines and address behaviors or practices that drive avoidable costs. Support continuous improvement by recommending corrective actions and monitoring effectiveness.

6. Communicate effectively with a variety of internal stakeholders (Trading, Marine Scheduling, Operations, Finance, Credit, Legal/Compliance, IT) and external counterparties to progress claim investigations and reach timely resolution. Prepare clear recommendations and summaries for management, including risk/financial exposure, settlement options, and documentation requirements.

7. Perform voyage-claims analytics to quantify economic impact, identify systemic issues, and support commercial decision-making. Build and maintain reports and ad hoc analyses (e.g., by terminal, route, vessel, counterparty, cause code, and time-bar compliance). Present results and conclusions via written summaries, tables, charts, or verbal briefings as required.

8. Participate in special projects and assignments supporting Commercial Operations, Marine Accounting, and systems/process initiatives related to voyage performance, claims governance, and controls. Contribute to audits, procedure updates, system testing, training, and cross-functional initiatives as needed.
