Job Summary
Directs the overall laboratory activities for the Corpus Christi Refinery. Provides accurate, timely test results, analyses, and recommendations on problem solving necessary for the efficient refinery operation. Ensures continued growth in laboratory analytical testing reliability, statistical process control and capabilities. Provides analytical expertise, equipment maintenance and computer expertise for solving process and laboratory problems. Conducts laboratory hourly and supervisor safety meetings to promote safe operations. Manages the production and activities of chemists, supervisors, and managers. Plans and directs work, provides training, facilitates interaction with other work groups, establishes goals and objectives and sets performance criteria. Reviews candidates to fill vacancies and conducts performance reviews. Establishes and manages operating budgets.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering or related discipline.
- Minimum of Eight (8) years laboratory experience
- Working knowledge of Laboratory Management Systems and Laboratory Quality Assurance/Quality Control processes; highly preferred
- Working knowledge of ISO Quality Programs & LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) Management skills; highly preferred
Job Duties
- Manage Supervisors, Chemists, and Contract Personnel. Balance employee and laboratory workloads and ensure effective training and qualification of all laboratory employees. Define department goals consistent with Refinery for use in employee development plans and conduct performance reviews and implement employee development plans.
- Directs and manages all Laboratory Employee Safety Programs including, but not limited to, safety meetings, safety audits, and housekeeping programs. Ensure OSHA ventilation and EPA regulatory (NPDES) compliance.
- Manages laboratory priorities to provide support to operations in a consistent and timely manner. Assists Operations and Maintenance in troubleshooting Refinery problems.
- Directs and manages Laboratory Quality Control Program to ensure compliance to applicable regulations and ensure accurate results in support of refinery operations and maintenance.
- Formulates the Laboratory’s medium and long rang equipment plan to ensure the Laboratory is moving ahead technologically.
- Establish and manage Laboratory Performance metrics and track overall testing performance. Prepare Laboratory status reports for communication to management.
- Directs and provides support for Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and equipment, consumables, and supplies.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: The Maritime Transportation Security Act requires all persons who will need unescorted access to a regulated facility to have a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC), issued in accordance with the rules established by the United States Coast Guard and the Transportation Security Administration. Candidates selected for employment must meet eligibility criteria to obtain a TWIC card.
